Japanese-Inspired Coffee Table

This coffee table is inspired by furniture used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. A complex, hand-fit Japanese scarf joint holds the top together with a single wedge. It rests on squat, colorful legs. The wood grain and live edge shape flows like a stream – bringing grace to this monolithic design.

John rescued the elm wood slabs that make up this table from a massive felled tree on its way to the firewood pile, and revealed their beauty with the chisel and block plane. It was a near thing. This flowing grain was nearly reduced to a few hours of warmth!

Upkeep: This coffee table is treated with a blend of natural oils. An oil finish provides a warm, tactile surface, but does require some easy maintenance. When the wood begins to look dull or dry, rub on a bit more oil. We recommend our own blend, which you can buy here. On slabs of this size, its common to see small checking along the end grain – this is natural and adds character to the piece.
